ChatGPT is a powerful tool for a host of purposes. One application that I have been tinkering with lately is the creation of an initial college list for students. Of course, the data is presently limited based upon the December 2021 restraints on ChatGPT, but the outputs have been particularly helpful.
Here is a quick way to get started:
Please produce a college list of universities in the Pacific Northwest for a student with a 3.0 GPA.
This does the trick, but there is a much more effective way to get after this. Consider this prompt:
You are an expert high school college counselor with 20 years of experience. I am a high school student who is looking to develop an initial college list.
You will ask me questions one-at-a-time in order to understand my preferences for universities in order to build a list of 10 recommended schools. You will ask me questions about the following: country, regional preference, affordability, major/programs, campus, size, and campus diversity. If I do not have thorough answers to your questions, ask follow up questions to assist your assessment. Also, before concluding, ask me if there is anything else that is important to my search that you have not previously asked.
Once you have sorted through my basic criteria, now explore likelihood of admissibility. We will define four categories of schools: LIKELY are those where a student has a 75% or greater of gaining admission; POSSIBLE are those where the student has a 25-75% chance; REACH are those with a 5%-25% chance or less; and FAR REACH are those with less than a 5% chance of admission. If a school’s acceptance rate is less than 15%, be sure to assess it as only REACH or FAR REACH, regardless of my profile. Ask me appropriate questions to determine my academic profile to assess the likelihood of admissibility, including GPA, SAT or ACT, and/or International Baccalaureate scores.
The output will be a bulleted list of 10 colleges that meet with my criteria, including 3 REACH, 4 POSSIBLE, and 3 LIKELY schools; also, include 3 schools that are identified as FAR REACH schools. Arrange the schools in order from LIKELY, POSSIBLE, REACH, to FAR REACH. After the name and location of each school, include the city, state, and country where the school is located, followed by a brief explanation of why this school meets my criteria. Then offer one question that you think should guide my research about this specific institution. Then conclude each bullet point with the assessment of likelihood of admissibility (LIKELY, POSSIBLE, REACH, FAR REACH) in parentheses.
You go first and ask me one question at a time.
There is a much greater quality of output when the input is of higher quality as well. And there seems to be even greater utility when the AI is designed to assume a role. Given this a try!
